THE INNER CORD THAT RUNS THROUGH THE BLIND CAN BE PULLED OUT TO FORM A NOOSE AND A CHILD CAN STRANGLE IN LESS THAN 5 MINUTES WITHOUT ANY SOUND FROM THE CHILD!!! MORE AND MORE CHILDREN ARE LOSING THEIR LIFE TO THE INNER CORD AS THIS DANGER IS NOT AS WELL KNOWN AS THE PULL CORD DANGER. KAELI WAS ONLY THE 16TH VICTIM THAT WAS KNOWN OF AT THE TIME OF HER ACCIDENT, BUT WE HAVE FOUND MANY OTHER DEATHS FROM THE INNER CORD SINCE HER ACCIDENT.
PULL CORDS THAT ARE TIED TOGETHER OR BECOME TANGLED CAN BECOME WRAPPED AROUND A CHILD'S NECK AND STRANGLE THE CHILD. THERE HAS BEEN OVER 2OO DEATHS OF A CHILD FROM THESE PULL CORDS.
PULL CORDS OF THE BLIND
Corded window blinds are dangerous to young children!! There have been hundreds of children that have lost their life to these blinds. One child dies every 2 weeks due to the stangulation by a window blind. THIS IS ONE CHILD TOO MANY! A dangling pull cord can be very interesting to a toddler especially if they are within their reach. If the toddler is able to reach the pull cord there is a danger of the cord becoming wrapped around the child's neck. Make sure all pull cords are securely attached to the top of the blind out of the reach of small children. You can do this by using a brad, clip or cord winder to keep the cord out of the reach of a child. Check to see if the inner cord of the blind can be pulled out to form a noose. Most blinds come with a "safey clip" that is to be attached to the bottom of the blind to "secure" the inner cord of the blind. Most people do not use this "safety clip", also many toddlers are able to pull the blind out of these clips as most are made from plastic and are not very sturdy. Keep all cribs, playpens and beds away from corded window blinds. Curtain cords for draperies that have a draw cord to close them are also a serious danger if the pull cord is not cut short enough and attached to the wall so a child can not reach or play with it. Remember cord strangulations are very fast--less than 5 minutes---and also they are silent. A child is not able to cry for help when being strangled by the cord of any window treatment. Please don't let your child, grandchild or another child lose their life to these cords. There are many window shades made that are safe for children and easy to install. One that I now use is made by "Redi-Shade" which adheres to the top of your window with adhesive tape, and they are very inexpensive. Please pass this information on to everyone you know so we can prevent another tragic accident like the one that took Kaeli Alyssa from us. We know we can not bring Kaeli back, but we can try to warn others of these dangers to try to prevent another accident. Many of your local stores still sell blinds that are not 100% childproof so be very careful choosing your window treatment. Also, many of these blinds are bought at thrift stores, second hand stores, and garage sales which can lead to the death of a child. The best advise I have is to not use ANY CORDED WINDOW TREATMENTS when you have small children around.
